[Birdtalk] Lincoln Beach

Hi,
I'm new to the list, and my husband and I have been birding for about a
year.

We went to Lincoln Beach this morning (9 -11 a.m.) to see the Snow Bunting,
which is a life bird. We heard it calling from about 3 feet away and saw
glimpses through the thick reeds -- my husband got a better look than I did.
While I quietly waited around for it to reappear, a Virginia Rail emerged
approx. 5 feet in front of me, and I watched it forage for about 10 minutes
before it returned to the reeds. (My poor husband missed this one.) Since
I'm new, the Rail was a life bird too. I think I saw the Bunting in flight
30 minutes later; however it was flying away and quite distant (the white
with black wing tips was visible).

We also saw a Norther Flicker, 2 male Red-winged Blackbirds, an American
Kestrel, a couple Song Sparrows, 5 American Coots, 8 Canada Geese and a
handful of small distant shorebirds that were too silhouetted for me to
identify. All this was from the vantage point of the south jetty.

I didn't realize this was a heavy hunting area -- we heard gunfire the whole
time from a nearby range (?) and saw duck hunters placing decoys. We left
before the carnage began.

Thanks for sharing, so new folks can learn!
