Today I went with the Great Salt Lake Audubon Society to do some birding at their Jordan River Restoration Site. It is located on the east side of the Jordan River, approximately between 10600 and 11000 South. It composes approximately 125 acres (if I remember right) between the GLS Audubon Society and the City of South Jordan's restoration efforts. I had not been there before and it was pretty impressive. Though still in its early stages, significant restoration has been done and more is underway (tree seedlings only one or two feet tall). The most recent effort was done last year when Willow Creek was re-channelized from its former canal/ditch, straight to the Jordan River "design" to a meandering stream, with ponds and wetlands. Already the birds are taking advantage of these changes. Give it another 10 to 20 years a great riparian habitat will have been restored. Though many expected "passing through" migrants were not seen, during the two hours we were there a total of 29 species were noted. The list:
American White Pelican, Mallard, Great Blue Heron, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, California Gull, Forester's Tern, California Quail, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Western Kingbird, Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, American Robin, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, European Starling, Song Sparrow, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, Bullock's Oriole, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Brown-headed Blackbird, House Finch, House Sparrow.
Thanks,
Stephen
