I've enjoyed everyone's yard bird reports. Here's one from Vernal, since I
happened to be home and able to watch my feeders for a while yesterday
(5/12):

Lazuli bunting - at least 6

Cassins finch - about 40 (they've been outnumbering house finches for
several weeks now)

House finch - 2

Am. goldfinch - 7

Pine siskin - 5

Eurasian collared-dove - 2 (an unusually low count for my yard)

Mourning dove - 1

Brown-headed cowbird - 5

Black-chinned hummer - perched under my picnic table to escape the rain

Broad-tailed hummers - not counted, but had some buzzing the feeder off and
on

Am. robin - 1

Western meadowlark - 1

House sparrow - 4

Black-headed grosbeak - 4 (first of season for me)

European starling - 4

Some of my other first-of-season sightings:

April 27 - green-tailed towhee, blue-gray gnatcatcher, black throated gray
warblers show up on the pinyon-juniper walks I do near town. Also heard
Wilson's snipe in the fields and saw my first hummingbirds at the house

May 4 - lazuli buntings and Western kingbirds in the yard

No orioles yet but I have the jelly feeder out and am hopeful.

Kathy
