Dennis Shirley and I spent a few hours this morning making the circuit
from Santaquin to Elberta, up Goshen Canyon and around Mona reservoir.
We didn't see anything too unusual but we were surprised by how slow
Spring is in coming. There were a number of species one might normally
expect to see by now that were not evident, such as yellow-breasted
chats, blue grosbeaks, common yellowthroats, and etc. and in many areas
the vegetation looks more like late March than early May. Best birds of
the day were the Lewis's woodpecker that very nearly flew in through
Dennis's window as we drove through Mona and the short-eared owl we saw
out near the bobolink fields in Goshen.
