Buck,  

Meridian Road, as roads go, is rather short.  You can access the north end of it from Highway 101 and 2400 West.  The South end ends in McMurdy Hollow. The road lies on the Salt Lake Meridian, hence the name.  It is 2400 West, counted from Main and Center in Logan.   Beginning at Hwy 101 going south, you will cross over the little Bear River, then through some agriculture lands, and come to the Mt Sterling road at 6600 South.  If you hang a right here you will soon be at the Hyrum Dam.  Continue on south and you will go up a good incline to the summit where there is a grand panorama of the valley.   Continue on down the other side, and now you are in McMurdy Hollow.  Go eastward here and you will cross the Little Bear River, and come to  Paradise. If you went west instead, you would be on the Pisguah road and eventually come out just below the summit of Wellsville Canyon.  Don't do this for at least another month.  The road still has snow on it and is bad muddy if wet.  When you get to Paradise you can go North on 400 West and take the back road to Hyrum and the Hyrum Dam.   

To get on McMurdy Hollow road from Paradise, go West on 8700 South.  Paradise streets are also numbered from Main and Center in Logan.  

Any way, this is what I call the local loop from Paradise.    The area has wetlands, ponds, riparian habitat, The Little Bear River, agricultural lands, sagebrush, mountain meadows and the lake at Hyrum Dam.    It is a fun little close to home trip for us.  If we really feel adventurous, we might take a trip to the Porcupine Dam too.

    Birds of Paradise,  (Southern Cache Valley)  to include McMurdy Hollow Meridian Road, and Hyrum Dam.  Things are changing.  A quick trip around what I call the "Local Loop", turned up the following:

    Chukar, Ring-necked Pheasant, Mourning Dove, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Violet Green Swallow, Swainson's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Kestrel,   Black-capped Chickadee, Robin, Western Kingbird, Snowy Egret, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, Common Loon, California Gull, Franklin's Gull, Western Grebe, Clark's Grebe, Eared Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser,  Mallard, Canada Goose, Double-crested Cormorant, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Brown Cowbird, Flicker, Magpie, Kingfisher, Cassin's Finch, House Sparrow, House Finch, White-crowned Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Lazuli Bunting, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Great Horned Owl, Starling, Meadow Lark, Brewer's Blackbird,  and Red-winged Blackbird.     Other possibilities that have been seen in this area in the last week include:  Northern Oriole, Cooper's Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-headed Blackbird,  Crow, Rough-winged Swallow, Coot, White-faced Ibis, Killdeer, Harrier, and American Goldfinch.
    Alas, they didn't show today.

    It is a good time to get out and look.
