I visited the pond on the west side of Logan Landfill and saw the Horned Grebes that were previously reported. The two grebes that I saw this morning looked different from the bird that I saw yesterday evening. There were also American Avocets at the pond, plus the usual birds that have been reported. I saw a Greater Yellowlegs at the Fish Hatchery. The Killdeer population has gone up dramatically in the past few days, along with the Sandhill Crane numbers. At the Benson Marina there was about a dozen or so Western Grebes. In past years I mostly saw Clark’s Grebes at the marina and the Westerns were at Cutler Marsh. There was also a pair of Double-crested Cormorants at the marina. There was a Golden Eagle near the entrance to Sardine Canyon (near the Wellsville exit). In spite of the nasty weather it was fun to get out see what is new in the valley.
Thanks.
Buck Russell
