Subject: Driveway Birding (and an embarassing request)
Email_Address: dlj11350 at yahoo.com
Message: Was standing outside my front door in the Avenues in SLC last evening, the 18th, when a screech owl came zooming up my driveway and landed in a front yard tree (screech owls have nested in my block for a number of years) - very nice, I thought. Next a.m. I was standing outside my front door when a raven came zooming down my driveway at window level and headed off south - I see them regularly in the Avenues but this one was just plain daring. Later in the a.m. I was once again outside my door (don't I do anything else?) when a bird came zooming up the driveway. Was that a....? Hmmm. I went out front and there it was, standing on the lawn, a mockingbird. Well. Had one in my parking lot/yard last year and thought it was a once-in-a-blue-moon fluke, but here was another.
Pathetic request: My best and only birding buddy moved out of state last year. I've been birding for 30 years and am without a car and am pathetically looking for someone who occasionally is looking for another person to go out into the field with. Most specifically, though I've been birding since time began, I still haven't added Greater White-fronted Goose to my life list - the ONLY person in Utah never to have seen one. I keep reading about sightings and get, well, frustrated as I have no way of getting to where they/it are/is. Anyone willing to take a chance and take me out to see one when another appears? I'm honest, trusty, brave and true and of course will cough up gas money. References: Sylvia Gray likes me (hope you don't mind, Sylvia). I'm not on the 'net at home (come to the library once or twice a week to log on here) and will probably will be back here this Friday. I'll look for any responses then. Thanks. Watch out for those renegade mockingbirds!
