Hi,

Boy did I pick a bad morning to head north to see the white geese. Just
north of Smith & Edwards, the temperature dropped from the low thirties to
twenty-two, and the light snowstorm had turned the road to ice. There were between
thirty and forty slide offs including a couple of wrecks. The icey conditions
went past the weigh station. Lucky to get through unscathed.

I stopped in Corinne for a half hour to let the fog burn off and went in
search of the geese. There was a flock of a couple thousand right at the posted
spot. They were quite a ways away for any decent pictures, but worth the
drive. A couple of miles farther south and west there were two fields with ten
thousand or so in them. Wow.

I went to Bear River again just because I was close. A couple of Vesper
Sparrows and a Savannah Sparrow near the Visitors Center. The geese and swans
have moved and most of the swans are on the ice on the south end of the tour
loop. Fun to listen to the continual calling.

I saw a couple of Marsh Wrens around the loop and a Peregrine Falcon over
the fields on the way out.

Jack Binch
