I spent a few hours in southern Utah county and northern Juab county this
afternoon. Mona reservoir is about 25% ice free, nearly all at its south
end. The northern end of the reservoir remains almost completely iced over
except around the edges and at the extreme northeastern corner, to which
there is no access. The paved road out to the dam & picnic area is dry and
in excellent condition. The dirt roads in the area were muddy, treacherous,
and probably not passable except in 4wd vehicles with good tires.
There were numerous birds on the open water at Mona reservoir. A single
Clark's grebe was seen on the open water on the south end. I also observed
11 snow geese at the northern end, which is perhaps only noteworthy as this
is the first time I have observed snow geese at this location. I also
observed eight American avocets in the shallow seasonal pond to the west of
the Goshen Warm Springs area, along with numerous waterfowl.
