This morning I birded the Daniel Experimental Forest (just above Peter Sinks) in Logan Canyon. I saw several first of year birds: Golden-crowned Kinglet, Brewers Sparrow, and Red-breasted Nuthatch. In the open areas I found several Brewer Sparrows and lots of Chipping Sparrows. There was no shortage of Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the forest. I was surprised that I did not see Red Crossbills, but maybe next time. I stopped by the camp host site at the Lewis Turner Campground and saw a Rufous Hummingbird (as reported by Bob Atwood last week), Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds. The camp host is a birder and very friendly. She said that the Rufous Hummingbirds generally are only around in the early morning and late afternoon.
I saw my 200th county bird today. I know there are other birders in the county who hit this number earlier in the year, but this is a personal best for me to reach this number before July 1st. I defeated the 2005 Buck Russell record and look forward to next year when I will try to crush the 2008 Buck Russell. It is the madness of a crazy lister. I wonder if I can locate another Whip-poor-Will next June? I should probably seek counseling, but the voices in my head advise me not to. Now that I have the 200 Club monkey off my back for the year, I should probably paint the house. No, the voices in my head say that it can go another year, besides I still need a Townsend’s Warbler. Ah, the joys of insanity.
This year I focused more on bird photography, not chasing birds. I slowed down my pace. I wonder if there is a correlation between a slower pace and my best year ever?
