[Birdtalk] ABA listing rules (was "Whip-poor-will")

It is the American Birding Association. The only "stick" they carry is that unless you follow their rules, you are measuring your life list by different standards than most/many serious birders in America. That may not be of any interest to you, especially if you are not the sort of person to compare your life list to others. We all keep our own private lists, but for those who keep a "social list" that they like to share with others, a common set of rules becomes necessary for that sharing to make any sense. If I say to you, "I saw an Ostrich in Utah", you may be surprised or you may realize I have other standards than those published by the ABA (they do not recognize the ostrich as "countable" in Utah because there are no viable, self-sustaining, wild populations running about).

But, as has been noted many times before, the choice is entirely yours whether to give a hoot and how/if to count your birds. No stress.

What is the ABA and what benefit does it give to individuals
that would entice us to follow it's rules? And/or what stick does
it carry?
