Hi all,
There's nothing really extraordinary here, but out of state folks may have
an interest in a few of these birds...
Tim noted the lack of crossbills in the Uinta Mtns last week so I thought it
was noteworthy that I've had RED CROSSBILLS fly over my apartment below the
University of Utah twice in the last couple of weeks...presumably these are
birds using the Salt Lake Cemetery still?
The area around the last switchback before Little Mountain Pass (the top of
Emigration Canyon - Salt Lake Co.) along the road in Emigration Canyon still
has a PLUMBEOUS VIREO, ORANGE-CROWNED, MACGILLIVRAY'S and VIRGINIA'S
WARBLERS, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, LAZULI BUNTINGS and FOX SPARROWS singing
as of early last week. A GRAY CATBIRD was singing along the road just above
Mountain Dell Reservoir. On the big hill going from Mountain Dell Reservoir
to Little Dell Reservoir, BREWER'S SPARROWS, WESTERN MEADOWLARKS and
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were all singing in the sagebrush/grass to the east of
the road.
I was up on Black's Mountain and in City Creek Canyon early this morning.
Song this morning was remarkably less than even a week ago in the lower
foothills. Only a few LAZULI BUNTINGS were heard on the way up to Black's
Mountain. A LARK SPARROW was singing along the ridge that separates City
Creek Canyon from the Salt Lake Valley. Birds heard while up on Black's
Mountain included a singing ROCK WREN, WARBLING VIREOS, an ORANGE-CROWNED
and a VIRGINIA'S WARBLER, a small flock of PINE SISKINS, CORDILLERAN
FLYCATCHERS in the fir forests on the north facing slopes of Black's
Mountain, and other regulars. A couple SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were singing
along the creek above the end of the road in City Creek Canyon.
