On 6-19-08 I birded the Jordanelle mitigation area. I was specifically looking for the American redstart that I had seen there the last few years. I started birding at the trail head just below the dam. The redstart was a no show, however the birding was great. On the way back I saw a couple of birds in heavy cover and on the ground. One disappeared in the brush but the other came out and gave me a good lock for several second and at about 15 feet. The bird was obliviously a thrush but the color and markings confused me. It was a dark chocolate brown on head, neck, back and tail. the breast and belly were white and it had a few small dark spots on the lower neck and upper breast. I thought veery but all of my experience with veerys have all been with the light chocolate birds of the east. When I got back to my car I checked a field guide and there it was a dark phase veery. I apologies but I do not have an exact location The sighting was about three hundred yards from the trail head, + or - about 100 yards and it was on the west or river side of the trail.
