[Birdtalk] Sunday at Bear River MBR

I think Jack's idea that we should report on low bird activity as well as
high is a good one. Who wants to make a trip of significant distance if
someone else already knows the birding isn't good at that time?

Two friends of mine recently traveled to a favorite marsh I was planning to
visit this week in preparation for a Saturday trip with a group. Their
report reflected unusually low activity and therefore, I cancelled my trip.
I'll conserve my gasoline for something more worthwhile and am thankful I
knew my prospects.

Subject: [Birdtalk] Sunday at Bear River MBR

  Hi,

I made the trip to Bear River MBR on Sunday, thinking that it may not be
open to the general public for a while. I did not see any preparations being
done for the roadwork. Maybe Betsy can alert us before the road is closed.

I drove around the loop a few times, and saw a couple of late dowitchers,
one of which looked to me like a Short-billed. I sent a photo to a couple of
people for some other opinions. I took a long distance shot of a Great
Egret, and was surprised when I looked at the photo at home to see that it
was in breeding colors. See attached photo. There really wasn't much to
report. I had hoped to see some baby Pied-billed Grebes or others, but did
not see any.

On the way home I saw a couple of Long-billed Curlews right off the
roadside, and they had a couple of young with them. I ran out and got a
picture of one. The parents were not happy and I left in a hurry.

Anyway, the main purpose of this post is to see if, with the price of
gasoline, people may be open to posting their trip even if not much was
seen. It could save an expensive trip for someone else. I have been hesitant
to do this because someone may go to the same area on the same day and have
great results. Perhaps they were there at a different time or just happened
to be in the right spot at the right time.

What do others think of this idea?

   Jack Binch
