I wonder how you are feeding your sugar water? My hummingbird feeders have such a small hole for the small bills of the hummers that the finches cannot get at the syrup. I am not surprised to hear that they will eat sugar water. I know they like fruit. They peck holes in many of my apples each year. They also eat the winter buds of the nanking cherries, plum and hawthorn trees that are near the feeders and are the trees they hang out in waiting their turn at the feeders. Because of this there are very few blooms on these trees and shrubs. They also feed at the suet feeders. Of course they devour their share of sunflower and millet seed too. Sometimes, I like to think of them as pests, (especially when picking apples) but then I remember how much enjoyment we get from watching the birds, and just pay the price. :)

How do I put the following question out to the full membership?

Why do common house finch like sugar water as much as my Hummers do?
