Kris,
Thanks for the update on this award for Bill. The minute I walked into Bill's store, I knew I needed to work there. And so I did, and have never been sorry. I have learned so much from him because of his incredible knowledge, wit, and willingness to share with others his love for nature. Time and time again I have been amazed at his memory, accounting details of his experiences to others, so that they may learn as well. He also has a listening ear for unaccountable tails and stories from others. He never puts anyone down for their lack of knowledge. His talents and beliefs in "passing it on" are appreciated by the hundreds of people he has made acquaintance with over the years. "The Backyard Birds" series that he has written will continue to draw and educate birders, from identification, habitat, nesting, range, song and size. With the help of this book they can quickly identify their "very own" backyard birds, along with other important knowledge. I have always said, "to know a bird is to love a bird". Bill has and will continue to do that for others. Backyard bird feeding is one of the fastest growing hobbies in America today, and Bill's name should be remembered as part of accomplishing that.
I too offer my congratulations to Bill, and I'm so glad that I have had the opportunity to work with, as well as be educated by, one of the best, and to also say he is my friend.

Congratulations to Bill Fenimore, recent winner of the Roger Tory Peterson
Institute's Nature Education Achievement Award. Bill is a staunch community
supporter and nature educator and is a worthy recipient for this
national-level award! See the excerpt from the formal announcement, below.

  Kris

Jamestown, New York - James M. Barry, President of the Roger Tory Peterson
Institute of Natural History awarded William Fenimore, author, educator,
naturalist, field birder and Wild Bird Center franchisee, the Roger Tory
Peterson Nature Education Achievement Award. This prestigious award was
announced on July 1, 2008 in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the
birth of Roger Tory. The Roger Tory Peterson Nature Education Achievement
Award is a national award given to individuals and communities in order to
stimulate others to improve and expand the quality of nature education
programs across the country. Fenimore explains, "Birding has been the
pathway for me into a life long enjoyment of the natural world. It has been
my passion to share the joys of birding, especially with young children whom
I hope will follow in a similar path." Bill has been a very successful
franchisee with the Wild Bird Centers of America, Inc. in the Salt Lake
City, Utah area, since 2001. He conducts seminars and workshops educating
the public about birds and their critical habitat needs, and he leads
birding field trips for clients from around the globe. Mr. Fenimore is a
birding advocate who expresses his enthusiasm through involvement with
numerous programs and organizations, including as a leading organizer of the
Great Salt Lake Bird Festival, author of "Bird Sighting" a weekly Salt Lake
Tribune column, vice-chair of the Utah Division of the Wildlife Resources
Advisory Council, and now author of the Backyard Bird state identification
guide series. Bill also serves as Trustee and Board member of such diverse
organizations as the Utah Wildlife and Conservation Foundation, Ogden Nature
Center and Utah Wildlife Board Nominating Trustee (appointed by Utah
Governor Jon Huntsman). The American Birding Association recently honored
Fenimore in June 2008 with the Ludlow Griscom Award, its prestigious honor
for outstanding contributions in Regional Ornithology.
