Met Cal Robbins in the Monte Cristo campground this morning. Very nice fellow!
What was supposed to be a fun morning of doing some of my own birding turned into mosquito-slapping frenzy of an almost aerobic nature. See, Carma and I love to do these drop-and-go types of campouts and we hadn't been to the Monte campground for about 20 years! So, thinking to beat the crowds on the 4th of July weekend, we departed two days early.
It was a flawless drop-and-run with one minor exception: both of us forgot the skeeter repellent. As we left the Greenery at Rainbow Gardens, I thought certainly I could find some at Chris's or the Huntsville Chevron. Nope. It was like we were with Chevy Chase in Funny Farm's Redbud VT! So we took our chances. Bad decision. We managed to keep the critters out during the night...a Chev Suburban makes a great motel....but when morning came the skeeters were waiting outside. Luckly wearing coat and long pants, we tolerated for a short time then decided it was hopeless. Bagged it shortly after meeting Cal. Plenty of birds singing though. Beautiful setting but totally full of mosquitos. Cal was fine....you could smell the bug spray 10 feet away from him! Not a lesson learned, cuz we already knew it. Lesson learned: don't get old and forgetful.
Cal indicated he was following Kris's birding path...lagging behind by a couple of days. I assumed that was for purposes of avoiding garbage trucks? :) Sorry for the tease...hoping Kris is well enough now.
