Salem pond remains open and supports a modest duck population. There
were two red-breasted merganser drakes present at the south end of the
pond today in addition to the usual population of mallards, gadwall,
common goldeneye, northern shoveler, Canada geese, green-wing teal,
lesser scaup, ring-necked ducks, American wigeon, American coots, and
pied-billed grebes. The northern most end of the pond, at its outlet
through the residential area north of the highway, has been quietly
interesting over the last few weeks as greater scaup, canvasback, hooded
merganser, bufflehead, and northern pintail have made brief appearances.
A belted kingfisher is usually hanging around somewhere. White-crowned
sparrows, song sparrows, dark-eyed juncoes, house finches and American
goldfinches can usually be found in the bushes along the road at the
south end of the pond. Steller's jays and northern flickers are common,
again at the south end of the pond.
