The first annual Bluff CBC was held on Saturday December 29th. There
were 17 participants including three from the Wasatch Front, two from
Colorado, one from Illinois, one from Monticello, and ten birders from
Bluff. The weather was a bit cold early on but the skies were mostly
clear, the afternoon temperature reached the low 40s, and for the most
part the ground was completely free of that ugly nasty white junk that I
can't keep off my driveway. The scenery was absolutely stunning and
unsurpassed, as expected.
I would hope that each group of birders had its own highlights. For me,
I will never forget the seemingly never-ending stream of American crows
that flew past us down the San Juan river as the sun dipped low in the
west. I counted steadily and without stopping for over twenty minutes.
When the last bird passed us I had counted over 2,100 crows in that
single, continuous river of corvids. Other count highlights include a
snow goose, a Ross's goose, wood ducks, hooded mergansers, ferruginous
hawks, both bald and golden eagles, merlins, a peregrine falcon, a
northern shrike, American tree sparrows, chipping sparrows, and
Lincoln's sparrows. A complete list of the 64 species observed may be
found below.
Many thanks to the following participants. I very much appreciate your
time and efforts and look forward to seeing you at the 2008 Bluff CBC.
