Birders,
Happy New Year from Chan Chich, Belize. I have always
wondered what it would be like to take part in a CBC
without having to bundle up from the cold. Well,
yesterday I found out. Actually it was very warm and
humid. And we were interrupted by a two hour rain
storm, but we were still able to total 74 species in
our assigned area. The total Gallon Jug count was
more than 200 species. And the amazing thing was,
none of the birds we saw have occurred on any of the
Provo, Utah CBC's. None! Some of the more
interesting birds were saw were White Hawk, Ocellated
Turkey, various trogons and parrots, woodcreepers, and
five different woodpeckers.
Started out the new year with 42 species, one of
them Laughing Falcon, with most of them around Gallon
Jug. And we still have night birding to go. Will
probably post the birds when I get home the latter
part of the week.
Hate to tell you this, but it is really nice and
warm here. Howler and Spider Monkeys are very common.
Chan Chich is a very comfortable place to spend the
first day of the new year. Make it a good one.
