After reviewing Tim's photos of the Farmington Red-shouldered Hawk, I feel
certain that this bird is not the same one that vacationed at the Ogden
Nature Center recently. The ONC bird was clearly a juvenile of the elegans
subspecies. The breast was streaked brownish-rufous and the belly was barred
rufous; the bird didn't have the appearance of a pale upper breast and dark
belly band, as does the Farmington bird. I remember that the ONC bird's
front side was generally the same tone with little contrast between pale and
dark.
The Farmington bird appears to be predominantly brown and white with little
rufous or rusty tinge to the light breast streaking or belly barring.
I'd be interested in other opinions from people who saw both the ONC bird
and the Farmington bird, or reviews of photographs.
