Utah Birders & Refuge Friends,
With spring nearly here, it's time for us to begin thinking about our
second year of guided tours at Bear River Refuge. We have learned that
work on the refuge road WILL commence this summer, which means that for
part of the summer (likely June, July & August) the public will not have
access to the auto tour route via the county road. We will be offering
guided tours behind the gates during this time. In months the main refuge
road is available to drive, we will take tours only in areas of the refuge
normally open to the public.
We'd like to be able to offer tours to visitors as many days of the week as
possible. In order to provide these tours to the public, we'll need lots
of helpers. We're looking for people who are willing to be trained to lead
tours, and who can make a commitment of 8 hours per month. Regarding skill
level with bird I.D. - we would want you to be able to identify at least
75% of the birds you see on the refuge. It's most important that you have
good people skills and are able to provide a high quality experience for
visitors. Training will be provided, beginning in March, and will be
approximately 8 hours long. Content will include refuge history,
management, biology, customer service skills and logistics of the tours.
Work schedules will be set monthly, so you know what days and times you are
scheduled. You must be able to donate a minimum of 8 hours per month to
the program, which will run April through August.
If you are interested in helping us out with this program, please contact
me. Thanks!
