I had the day off so took some time to do a little birding this morning. Visited Decker Lake and the Stonebridge Golf Course "canal" north of Parkway Blvd. in West Valley City, Lee Kay Ponds north of the Salt Lake County landfill, and finally to Farmington Bay in Davis County. Nothing spectacular, but an early arrival (at least or me) of American Avocets at Decker Lake. The following is what I observed.

Decker Lake - 12 species: Common Merganser (7), Northern Shoveler (12+), Lesser Scaup (7), Mallard (12+), Green-winged Teal (3), Canada Goose, California Gull, American Avocet (4 just beginning their transition to breeding plumage and the earliest I have seen them), European Starling, Black-billed Magpie (1) and Red-winged Blackbird (3).

Stonebridge Golf Course "canal" north of Parkway Blvd. - 7 species: Common Merganser (3), Red-breasted Merganser (1), Canada Goose (12+, but no Cackling), Northern Shoveler (12+), Mallard (12+), American Coot (2), American Kestrel (1).

Lee Kay Ponds - 17 species: Tundra Swan (5 in the smaller east pond, as reported earlier by Tim and company), Canada Goose (3), Canvasback (50+), Redhead (10), Common Goldeneye (12), Bufflehead (2), Ring-necked Duck (1), American Widgeon (3), Mallard (12+), Green-winged Teal (7), American Coot (5), California Gull (2,500+, but nothing unusual and I tried to find something), Ring-billed Gull (100+), Herring Gull (2), Thayer's Gull (3), European Starling, Common Raven (5).

Farmington Bay - 14 species with lots of cars and people so I didn't stay very long: Pied-billed Grebe (2), Tundra Swan (50+), Canada Goose (24+), Northern Shoveler (30+), Canvasback (12+), California Gull, Bald Eagle (35+), Rough-legged Hawk (1), Northern Harrier (1), Red-tailed Hawk (2), Ring-necked Pheasant (1), American Robin (2), Common Raven (1), American Crow (1 seen in Farmington City on the way home)

Thanks,

Stephen
