my first ever GBBC! For this very beautiful first day, I drove around the
fields of the southern Cache Valley, then came into Logan, then back home
via 800 West (goes past the Weathershield plant, or whatever company now
owns it). For those interested in owling, I discovered a great horned
enclave in Young Ward on 3200 West. One of the residents on that street
told me about them, how they hear the babies and the hooting of the adults
at night. I'm checkiing this out tonite around midnight. I got up at 4AM
to see if I couldn't see some owls in action, but had no luck. I often hear
great horneds hooting somewhere in my neighborhood when I leave for work,
but I can never quite catch on to where they are.
All in all, I thought the birds were not very cooperative for my first GBBC
- I didn't see any raptors except about 3 Kestrels and 3 No Harriers. On
other outings, I see more hawks and eagles than you can shake a stick at,
but not today. BUT I did see some SONG SPARROWS,with one Southwest variant
(he was distinctly more rufous than his playmates). I also saw a flock of
32 CEDAR WAXWINGS and a HOUSE FINCH, YELLOW variant has showed up in my
backyard feeder. Other than that, it was pretty much the usual gang.
Today's species total is 25.
Here's the mixdown:
