Stephanie Cobbold and I took a walk around Logan today and looked at
birds along the way. We started up the Canal Trail
(http://www.utahbirds.org/counties/cache/tours.html#CanalTrail),
continued up to First Dam, then up the hill to the golf course and back
down to the start of the Canal Trail. Spring was in the air, with
"Fee-bee" songs from the chickadees and courtship displays by the
Barrow's Goldeneyes at First Dam. We didn't see anything too
remarkable. There was one Yellow-rumped Warbler along the Canal Trail.
On the hillside above First Dam, near the canal and the golf course, we
saw a flock of about six Chuckars, a species that was missed this year
on the Logan CBC but is usually seen. From all the tracks in the snow,
I'd guess they've been hanging around the area for at least the last few
days. We watched a Sharp-shinned Hawk take a shot at a flock of
American Robins, but it missed. A flock of 14 Rock Doves in which more
than were half pure white or leucistic individuals made me wonder if
people still release these at weddings, especially since we were only a
half mile or so from the Logan Temple.
Here is our complete list of species:
