Next weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count. Last year Utah birders reported 129 species and submitted 404 checklists during the count. How many species are out there this year? And how many checklists can we get? Surely we can do better than Idaho (154 species and 469 checklists)! The more counts we get reported, the better our picture of the bird populations across the state.

So make plans to count the birds in your yard each day next weekend (Friday-Monday), and count the birds in your local park or favorite birding spot. Submit the counts at http://birdcount.org<http://birdcount.org/> and lets see how many species and checklists we can get in.

And if you need more motivation than just a big number or lots of dots on the GBBC maps, each time you enter a count, you are entered to win one of hundreds of prizes we are giving away! So submit as many counts as you can!

Head on out next weekend and see as many birds as you can. And while you're reporting them to the GBBC website, check out the other new features there, including kid games and the official GBBC blog (http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/blog). Lots of fun for everyone.

But the most fun is getting out and counting the birds. So go have fun and make it the best GBBC yet.
