[Birdtalk] Hunger pangs

Connie,
Lately I've felt that way about the growing numbers of local pigeons (rock doves). You'd think with such a rich food supply, Peregrine populations would be on the rise.

Now that's what I call a close encounter. Give my regards to the kestrel. I have a strong dislike for starlings and am very happy to see them put to such good use... raptor food.

    Hi,

I got home a little early today and opened the drapes on the sliding door. There right next to the glass was a very recently deceased starling. I have a sharpie and a coopers that regularly come by, but I was sure it wasn't the coopers. It would have taken the starling with it. I looked in the yard and high up in a tree was a kestrel. I closed the drapes and locked the pet door, and sure enough within fifteen minutes it came down and resumed its meal. I kept watching it through a gap in the slats and maybe twenty minutes later it flew away leaving what was left of the starling. I had fed my dogs and they wanted out. I got some latex gloves and picked up the starling and threw it out in the trash.

The dogs went out and I opened the drapes. About a half hour later there is the kestrel sitting on the deck. Ok, I went outside and retrieved the starling and went out on the deck. The kestrel had gone back up in the tree. I showed him the starling and put it on the deck rail and went back in the house. Impatient little guy, he is eating the rest of his meal right now.
