On Saturday, February 2nd, 9 of us went to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and Mayor's Pond in Brigham City on a field trip sponsored by Great Salt Lake Audubon. We had a great day of birding. Fortunately, the roads had recently been plowed in the refuge and the sun was shining much of the time so getting around was not a problem. For instructions on getting to Mayor's Pond visit the Utahbirds.org website on places to bird in Box Elder County - easy to get to and close to the refuge, a small pond but certainly worth a stop. Also, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge web page contains directions and a good map.
While driving around the tour route at the refuge, we looked carefully at the many flocks of Horned Larks that we encountered but could not pick out any Longspurs, even though we really tried. In addition to the birds, other wildlife observed included several skunks, raccoons, and numerous deer.
