It was an odd day at my parents house in Sugarhouse. This morning I walked
outside to find 3 specis of woodpecker in a tree in the neighbors yard. 1
Northern Flicker, 2 Downy Woodpecker, and the suprise, and a new yard bird,
a Hairy Woodpecker. The birds could be heard every once in a while
throughout the day whenever I was outside... the Downies were going nuts. I
had to run some errands and upon returning to the house around noon I left
my car to what sounded like several Yellow-rumped Warblers up the street. I
strolled up and soon found 3 birds that were moving through the trees
together in search of food. This is only the 2nd time I have seen warblers
in the neighborhood in the winter (the first being just last week). A
pretty good day by that point.
Well I was outside just after 1pm in my garage when I swore I heard a
White-breasted Nuthatch calling. I emerged and walked into the backyard and
heard it again, for sure a White-breasted Nutatch. I started doing a
pygmy-owl call and within 30 seconds the tiny bird appeared on top of the
power pole in our yard. I went inside and grabbed my camera to take a few
shots, as this was another new yard bird (2 in a day! in the city!!!), and
it was rather close. When I came back out the bird was now working its way
down the pole and allowed me to shoot a few shots. Even though the light
wasnt; great I got some okay shots:

Ended up tallying 14 species in the yards today, and missed at least 2 of
the regulars (American Crow and California Gull).
