I paid a quick visit to Salem Pond around lunch time. In addition to the
Barrow's goldeneye (drake) mentioned in the subject line there were about
250 common goldeneye and about 500 other waterfowl, including about 20
canvasback, a pair of red-breasted mergansers, Canada geese, mallards,
American wigeon, gadwalls, green-winged teal, ring-necked ducks, northern
shovelers, and a few lesser scaup. I counted 12 Wilson's snipe sunning
themselves at various places on the bank on the far side of the pond. The
pond's resident belted kingfisher was also spotted hunting from a Russian
olive tree near the inlet end of the pond.
