The original bander's and field ornithologist's list alpha codes has been
expanded several times to include all of the birds covered by the AOU
checklist (that covers all of North and Central America) and modified to
reflect changes in that list. The updayes have been published regularly in
the journal Auk. A current list in various formats can be downloaded (PDF
file) at:

I, too recommend using the full name initially in posts to avoid confusion,
and double checking the correct code - I've seen some real arguments develop
when someone has inadvertently used a "non-official" alpha code!
