Provo Christmas Bird Count

Merrill, our fearless leader, was wounded during the count (broken thumb) so I offered to send a short summery of the Provo CBC for him. Merrill will have a CBC report in the January UCB Newsletter.

After tonight's compilation, total # of species seen on the Provo CBC is 92. This could change over the next few days. The weather may have knocked our total down a little. Utah Lake and Provo Bay were completely iced over resulting in lower waterfowl numbers.

Some of the more interesting sightings included -

108 Sandhill Cranes South of Provo Bay
a Northern Goshawk at Riverside Country Club
a few Merlins
302 Mourning Doves seemed like a high number for the Provo area this time of year
6 Western Screech-Owls
Northern Shrike
Juniper Titmouse
Bewick's Wren
American Tree Sparrows
a Savannah Sparrow
and 175 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches, including several 'Hepburn's', with a few Black Rosies mixed in, feeding at the base of cliffs in Dry Canyon.

Those of you who participated please feel free to add to these if I forgot any.

Notable misses included American Crow (0) and Steller's Jay (0).Eric Huish Pleasant Grove UT poorwill_ at hotmail.com 801-360-8777
