Doug,
The standard set of bird abbreviations, called alpha codes, was originally
intended for bird banders to make recording data easier than having to write
the whole bird's name each time. You can find them at the USGS Patuxent Bird
Banding Laboratory's website:
http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/manual/sname.htm
I believe the codes are for only those birds protected under the Migratory
Bird Treaty Act. For the sake of consistency, the lab also created codes for
gallinaceous birds that don't fall into the same category and may not be
banded with the same type of USGS bands:

Subject: [Birdtalk] brd abrvtns?
Hi,
I've noticed some birders use a set of bird abbreviations. Is there a
standard set? Where on the web would I see those?
Thanks,
Doug
