Dennis Shirley and I spent a few cool & breezy hours out this morning. The
most unexpected bird was a vesper sparrow seen about a quarter mile north of
Burriston ponds. The bird was initially not too cooperative, but we kept
after it and eventually got very good looks at it. Mona reservoir is
completely iced over and had a two small clusters of very cold-looking
mallards roosting on the ice. Other birds seen included rough-legged hawks
near Mona and Genola, two bald eagles at Mona reservoir, a golden eagle near
Genola Warm Springs, a great-horned owl along the highway between Santaquin
and Mona, and several large flocks of horned larks that did not have any
apparent longspurs tagging along.
