Dick and I birded about 1 1/2 hours at Clover Springs Campground today and were pleased at the amount of activity, though there were not large numbers of birds. Besides flitting around in the trees, the birds were bathing In two places along the shallow creek where vegetation gave them an apparent feeling of privacy. We did not identify all we saw, but enjoyed them all. Those identified are listed below:
Turkey Vulture - 2
Hairy Woodpecker - 1
Flycatcher (tentative ID = Willow)
Warbling Vireo - 1
Western Scrub-Jay - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Virginia's Warbler - 2
Yellow Warbler - 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 10
Black-throated Gray Warbler - 3 good looks but probably same bird
Townsend's Warbler - 1
MacGilivray's Warbler - 1
Western Tanagers - 10+
Chipping Sparrows - 2
Black-headed Grosbeak - 1
Lazuli Bunting - 2
Lesser Goldfinch - 4
We first stopped along the creek before reaching the campground where birds were mostly hidden in the large cottonwoods. The majority were Western Tanagers and Yellow-rumps, but one Plumbeous Vireo was singing and finally spotted.
American Robins, Mourning Doves, House Finches, Ravens, and a flock of jays flew through that likely were Pinyon, but did not see the field marks well enough to be sure.
Clover Springs Campground was a 1 hour and 10 minute drive from our house in Holladay.
