[Birdtalk] Time for Birders to Flock Together

Hi Birder Buddies,

I'm no better at this advocacy stuff than I am at birding. But I've got to say something, to save the birds, the planet, and the people:

Declining bird populations. High gas prices. Foreign oil addiction. Air pollution. Suffering economy. Global warming.

As birders, we need to emit our alarm call to Utah senators Orrin Hatch, Robert Bennett, and representative Rob Bishop. Rob Bishop will be holding a town hall meeting on Thursday, August 21, 6pm, at the Davis County courthouse, 28 East State Street, in Farmington, Utah. Let's plan to flock to the courthouse, to demand CLEAN ELECTRICITY IN 10 YEARS. Our country has what it takes to switch to clean, renewable wind, solar, and geothermal energy for all our electrical needs...just like Denmark did.

Come early so we can meet and sit together in front. I'll be wearing a green birder T-shirt and a Bear River MBR hat. I'll have some handouts for you.

Please read through this email below and join the campaign.
WE CAN SOLVE IT

Thanks,
Doug Roberts, retired engineer and birder
Bountiful, Utah

ps If anyone would like to help with this effort, please email me. Comments?
pps This is not about preaching or politics; it's about survival.

We Can Solve It

Dear Douglas,

Repower America! This country has all it needs to make the switch to 100% renewable and clean electricity within ten years -- except the policies to make it happen. I'm writing as the CEO of the We Campaign to ask you to take five minutes and call your member of Congress today. Even better, stop by their local office not far from your home and deliver the message in person before they get back to Washington after Labor Day.

It will be a challenge for the Repower America vision to break through in Washington, DC where big energy lobbyists have so much influence on the political discussion. But we're finding ways to make our message heard.

Last week, thousands of We Campaign members wrote letters to the editor in support of repowering America with 100% clean electricity in ten years. It was an amazing response and these letters are now showing up in papers and on websites across the country.

For the next three weeks, when most state and federal legislators are back in their districts, we'll keep finding ways to reach them directly with our message. One great way is the old fashioned way -- pick up the phone and call! Please add your voice by calling (202) 225-3121and ask to be connected to the main district office of your senators or your representative. You can also find the number yourself at www.senate.gov or www.house.gov.

When you get connected, tell the staff member that you want your elected official to commit to making our electricity 100% clean within ten years. Ask them if the Senator or Representative will commit to this.

When you're done, let us know how the call went.

Want to do more? We're encouraging people to stop by their elected official's district offices and meet with them. If you want to really get their attention, gather some neighbors and schedule an appointment. You'd be surprised how willing they are to meet with a dozen or so people. Click here for useful tips and information on how to make your visit successful.

There are more than a million of us. And we want America to make the switch to clean electricity -- within ten years. It's time we speak up.

Thanks for all your efforts,

CathyZoi
