Thanks, Milt, for sharing those wonderful hummer pics. Speaking of
hummers, I was at Red Butte Gardens yesterday photographing these
amazing birds. The first three hours of the outing were frustrating;
there were hummingbirds literally everywhere, but they were moving a
lot faster than this person could operate the camera. Finally, I found
a patch of pink flowers that were attracting loads of birds, so I stood
there for over an hour and was able to get some shots. I've sent a
couple to Milt for the website. The Rufous Hummers considered those
flowers to be a war zone, and they were really going after the
Black-chins, but the Black-chins outnumbered the Rufous by about ten to
one. It was highly entertaining.
I also saw two empids there, but they were gone in a hurry. I suspect
they might have been Dusky Flycatchers by habitat, but fall empids were
never my specialty.
Location: Red Butte Gardens is a botanical garden located just south of
the U. of U. campus. Enter by taking Wakara Way east off of Foothill
Blvd. There is an admission fee, but they also have free entry days if
you check their website. Some of the flowering plants were loaded with
big bees, so use caution if you are allergic - or bring your epi-pen.
