[Birdtalk] reply to BirdTalk -- birdtalk in cc box

I'm on seven birding e-mail lists. On six of them, using the "reply" function defaults to sending the reply to the sender of the original message, and not to the list. On the seventh, replies are sent to the list by default. I'm the listowner for this seventh list, so I guess you can tell what my personal preference is. :-)
I've noticed that people may hesitate to replt to postings on lists where the replies automatically go to the whole list. A lot of people don't seem to mind replying to an individual, but feel uncomfortable when their replies go to lots of people. Internet shyness, maybe?
Anyway, I guess I'm saying keep Birdtalk the way it is?

Subject: [Birdtalk] reply to BirdTalk -- birdtalk in cc box
Hi Doug and other BirdTalkers,
There is an option in BirdTalk to have reply go to the sender or to the whole group. The problem of having it go to the whole group is that if someone click "reply" thinking that it's going to go to the individual and writes something inappropriate for the whole group it could be quite embarrassing. (Not so bad the other way around -- if you think it's going to the whole group and it just goes to one individual).
When you click reply and the person's email address is in the "To" box you can replace it with the Bird Talk address (birdtalk at utahbirds.org) and it will go back to the sender and to everyone else too. (If you cc it to BirdTalk then the sender gets it twice).
We've considered the options and decided to set it up the way it is (the "birdnet hotline" is set up the same way and I think for that listserv it's definitely better the way it is -- it would be confusing to have one one way and the other a different way, I think) , but if there are a lot of people who would like "reply" to go to everyone (who would like to live dangerously, maybe), we can certainly change it -- it IS an option.
Alway good to get suggestions,
Milt Moody
