Just for kicks, I stopped at Willard Bay South Marina yesterday. I heard
the Marina was nearly empty of water due to a breach in the dike on the
north end. I don't know about the breach, but the lake does seem very empty
for this time of year and the tremendous amount of moisture we have had.
Anyway, I'm really glad i went. This place may be a sweet little hot spot
for birding since it won't be loaded with people this year -- I plan to
return there sometime this week when I have more time. In less than 1 hour,
I saw 11 species without any effort at all and one that I could not
identify - I wasn't there to bird, just check out the place and voi-la!
birds!
Western Meadow Lark 2
Barn Swallows 30
Bank Swallows 30
Sandhill crane 1
Bullocks Oriole 3
American Kestrel 1
Common Merganser 1
Western Grebe 1
Great Blue Heron 1
Western Kingbird 1
Red-tailed Hawk 3
Now folks, it's time for NAME THAT BIRD!!!
Found in brushy habitat, sparrow-like but larger, preferred to walk rather
than fly to escape my presence, pale malar streaks and eybrow, dark and
light stripes on its head. Sparrow-like stripes on back and wings were a
medium brown and the overall color was light tan or buffy, no rufous ,
yellows or blacks. It was kind of a blah looking thing. I tried to get a
look at its feet, but it scurried along too fast and kept in the weeds and
it never gave me a good look at its front. Any guesses??? Wish I had had
my camera!
enjoy the birding!
