I had a chance to spend a few hours out early this evening. I visited
Lincoln Beach, Benjamin slough, and the area around the Salem sewage
treatment plant. I was able to observe 46 species in spite of the wind,
including a number of first-of-season species for me personally:
- at Lincoln Beach, a gadwall-american wigeon hybrid: it looked exactly
like a gadwall except for a prominent cream-colored streak running from
its bill over top of its head to the nape of its neck
- an osprey at Lincoln Beach, and also one perched on a telephone pole
in the wetlands near the Salem sewage treatment plant
- snowy egrets at Benjamin slough
- white-faced ibis near Benjamin slough and also in the wetlands near
the Salem sewage treatment plant
- 6 or so snowy plovers seen at Lincoln Beach
- Wilson's phalarope seen in the wetlands near the Salem sewage
treatment plant
- a Franklin's gull at Lincoln Beach
- Caspian terns seen at Lincoln Beach and also at Salem pond
- two western kingbirds seen on 11200 South between Woodland Hills Drive
and Loafer Canyon Road
