I decided to cut out of work early and head up to the mountains for a hike
today. I often hike around the Mtn Dell/ Little Dell area. After spying a
COOPER'S HAWK swooping through the golf course, I headed over to Little Dell
to check the reservoir and then hike up river. Well to my surprise there was
a beautiful breeding plumage RED NECKED GREBE. I called Tim Avery and he
grabbed Colby and they headed up to see it. Then came Carl Ingwell and his
girlfriend Brittney and finally the Sommerfields'. The bird was on the East
side of the reservoir near the inlet mostly towards the North Shore but
occasionally drifting out and across. Also present were RING NECKED DUCKS,
a WESTERN GREBE, at least one COMMON LOON, EARED GREBES, KILLDEER, CANADA
GEESE, and MALLARDS. Colby said he saw a few WHITE FACED IBIS flying and I
saw a flock of them up in this area on Saturday as well.

After watching the Grebe for a while I headed off to the woods to see what
else I could find. Here's the list:
- American Robin 15
- Northern Flicker 7
- Hermit Thrush 1
- Dark Eyed Juncos 6
- American Kestrel 1
- Mallards 2
- Fox Sparrow 2
- Red Tailed Hawk 2
- Canada Goose 1
- Great Horned Owl 2 (1 along the river, 1 perched in a tree overlooking the
reservoir)
- Beaver 1
- Raccoon 1
- Porcupine 1

I think I may leave work early again tomorrow!

Good Birding.
