This morning Kim Sullivan's Ornithology class went birding at the Logan
sewage lagoons. We didn't see as many species as the Bridgerland Audubon
Society's trip on Saturday but still came away with about 32. They were:
Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Ring-necked duck, Ruddy duck, Canvasback, Gadwall,
Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Cinnamon
Teal, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, 7 Franklin's Gull, Eared Grebes
in winter and breeding plumage, 2 Western Grebes, 1 Clark's Grebe, American
Coots, American Avocet, American White Pelican, Canada Geese, American
Pipit, Spotted Towhee, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Song
Sparrow, Killdeer, European Starling, Western Meadowlark, Common Raven,
Turkey vulture and Sandhill Crane.
After leaving the sewage lagoons, we trekked over to the ponds behind the
landfill where we saw mostly the same birds--lots of California Gulls,
American Coots, Scaup, etc--but were rewarded by seeing the first Herring
Gull and Black-necked Stilts for the class. We also had a fun mammal
sighting of a marmot on the opposite bank.
Happy birding,
Sarah
