Yesterday my companion and I hiked the trail to the Hawk Watch International site.
Man, that was a tough hike, but worth it. Along the way there was lots of White-crowned Sparrows, and lots of Townsend's Solitaires. Other birds were Fox Sparrow, Mountain Bluebird, Spotted Towhee, Mountain Chickadee, Junco, Pine Siskin and Robin. The Robins and Solitaires were after some Choke Cherries that were still on the trees.
When we got to the observation site, there was a good flight in progress. I have never in my life seen so many Sharp-shinned Hawks. They just kept coming. Other hawks seen were: Swainson's Hawk, Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Kestrel, Broad-winged Hawk, Osprey, Coopers Hawk, and though not a hawk, one Raven.
The Broad- winged Hawk was a lifer for us. A lot of work to get a lifer. :)
It couldn't have been a better day to do that trip. It was cool, but sunny. The recent snow had melted and the trail was not slippery. The autumn colors were gorgeous, and the hawks were flying. I recommend this trip for anyone, but do get in shape first. I have a few sore spots this morning. I have been working on getting in shape for this, but that was a long and steep trail. Oh, give me my 19 year old body back?
Have a great day.
Jim
