Jeff,
Welcome to Utah! Glad to have another birder joining the list.
And I see this as a perfect opportunity to talk about the different lists as
lately there has been a lot of posting but quite a bit of confusion about what
to post to which list. I don't think anyone has really talked about this in
some time so...
For those who don't know, Utah has two statewide birding lists. BIRDTALK and
BIRDNET. The two lists are actually different lists and were created for
different types of posts about birds.
BIRDNET is supposed to be used to report rare birds, typically this is for
listers and those individuals who enjoy chasing after rarities. Besides
statewide rarities (example being a Neotropic Cormorant) this list is also used
to report local rarities, such as a Black Rosy-Finch at a backyard feeder away
from the mountains. And of course the term RARE can be taken in many ways,
leaving it open for any number of different reports.
BIRDTALK is supposed to be used to talk about birds, post lists, discuss bird
ID, talk about backyard sightings, and anything else bird related. This list
is the "everyday" list, where I tend to post my everyday sightings, pictures,
the RBA, etc. Rare birds are often posted here as well. And for instance the
discussion about global warming would be a typical birdtalk post instead of a
birdnet post.
There are also a number of local lists, for Utah County, Washington County, Salt
Lake and a list for the Moab area, although they are posted to quite less
frequently.
Here are a list of all the different lists:

Here is a link to the section of Utahbirds.org that Milt has setup for signing
up for any of the state and local lists:

I hope this was helpful, and if Milt our wonderful listowner and operator has
anything to add please do.
Cheers
Tim
