Subject: [IBLE] Avisys
I have been waiting for Harry Krueger to answer Lew's post, since
Harry is the one who convinced me that Avisys was the way to go. I
own Thayer's Birds of North America, which lets you keep track of
your birds besides providing a comprehensive guide with video and
audio, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new guide to
track my Hawaii list. Then I tried Thayer's Birders Diary, but it was
difficult to use, caused computer problems and was generally a pain
in the butt. (Then Thayer abandoned the program and gave/sold it back
to its creator.) So during our "Big Day" Harry suggested I try
Avisys, and I can honestly say I'm hooked. It makes entering
sightings simple, and it allows you to track by location, date and a
bunch of other variables. I can highlight a bird and it will tell me
all the times I have ever entered that bird in the program. It will
tell me what birds I've seen out of all those in North America, plus
tell me how many of those I've actually seen in Idaho. My Hawaii
birds went in easily, so now I have a NA list and a World list, with
2 different totals. I can bring up a list of all the birds Harry and
I saw on our big day, or I can bring up a list of all the birds I saw
on my last Malheur trip or bike ride or Hulls Gulch walk. I can
create a list for a trip to another state, but when I started to do
that for Utah recently, I decided I didn't want to print out 7 pages.
All in all, a great, simple program. Tom McCabe, Boise
