The Blue Jay has been a favorite of mine since childhood.....a childhood that happened in Willard at 196 S 200 W. To have a Blue Jay pass through and be seen in my old home town is really very cool coming from somewhere deep inside. Thanks for the report!
John

Subject: [Birdtalk] Blue Jay - Willard

  Hi all,

Tim Avery received word of a Blue Jay coming to a feeder in Willard yesterday. We became quite discouraged this afternoon after spending 3.5 hours watching the feeders at the residence with no Blue Jay. As a last ditch attempt, I decided to drive around the neighborhood while Tim waited at the feeders. As I was driving slowly around the neighborhood, I heard the Blue Jay call at approximately 200S and Main St. in Willard (Box Elder Co.). I drove back to get Tim, and we eventually spotted the bird moving with a scrub-jay 'flock' along the east side of Main Street between 200S and 300S.

A photo can be seen here...

Other birds of note seen while watching the backyard feeders were 8 migrating RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 STELLAR'S JAY, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE bathing alongside House Sparrows and 15 flyover RED CROSSBILLS.

We also stopped by Willard Bay SP where highlights included a raft of at least 300 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and ~100 BONAPARTE'S GULLS flying around the lake.

The pond to the north of Willard Bay SP contained 1 female RING-NECKED DUCK, 2 LESSER SCAUP, and a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS.

Also, we saw a female HOODED MERGANSERS at the Lee Kay Ponds (Salt Lake Co.) yesterday afternoon.

  Colby
