Oh horrors, it has come to this! I have been outed, and I think I'd best try some damage control.
Yes, just two nights ago Mark and I indeed went owling together (gods, I'm so ashamed...), but it was just harmless fun! I want to categorically deny that he and I constitute one of those couples that only accept new birds onto their lists if the other partner sees it as well. It's not like that. Really! Heck, I didn't even get the "alleged" Blackburnian warbler he claims so convincingly to have seen! And today I have been rocking back and forth in a fetal position next to my face mask because Mark rode off southward yelling taunts at me, vowing to return with somewhere between two and four new birds on his Utah list (Neotrop cormorant, LT jaeger, RB sapsucker, and some other foolishness I don't recall just now--it doesn't matter, he'll make something up). "You'll be eating my dust again by sundown!" he yelled as his tires spun out in a black cloud. Ever since his cackling faded down the street, I've been avoiding all ringing phones for fear that the dream would end. Why? WHY??? It was so beautiful for the week or so we were tied together at the top, united by love of our little avian buddies!!
Dust mask on stand by,
David
P.S. Milton, I hope you are pleased with yourself! Now our shame is in the open for all to see.

Well, actually there is a tie at the top of the Utah State Life list.
David Wheeler is now tied with Mark Stackhouse for the top spot with
384 species seen in Utah (nice of Mark to share the Blackburnian
Warbler sighting -- birders are such nice people!) -- (Looks like
they're in cahoots to me -- does that mean they go owling together? --
they did for their Big Day State Record -- definitely in cahoots!)
