With great birds showing up along the Great Salt Lake and also in
Washington county, it seemed natural to assume that - more or less in
the middle of the two - Fish Springs could also provide a birding
jackpot. So I took a gamble this morning. I'm sure there's something
great out there, but it wasn't my luck to spot it.

As it is currently for Bear River MBR, so it seems to be for Fish
Springs. There are a lot of birds where there's water, but a large
portion of the refuge is dry. I don't keep a formal count but it seems
to me the that bird numbers are probably lower than is usual for this
time of year. Coots were abundant, and northern pintails, American
wigeon, gadwalls, and ruddy ducks were pretty common. I can't believe I
didn't see a mallard. I spotted three great blue herons, no other
waders, and no shorebirds at all. Savannah sparrows are still around and
white-crowned sparrows and dark-eyed juncoes have moved in. A few
mourning doves are still hanging around.

Still, a day at Fish Springs, even an average birding day, is better
than a day at work.
