Perhaps it is a matter of finding what you're looking for, but I've had
a couple observations lately that seem to fit well with the reported
pattern of high altitude birds coming down earlier or to lower
elevations than usual this year. I'm still relatively new to the area,
so forgive me if any of these are regular or expected occurrences for
this time of year. I've had a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH calling
periodically for the last week or so near my house on the valley floor
in Logan, Cache County. I've also seen a female CASSIN'S FINCH joining
the house finches in my yard (blurry digiscoped photo at
http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n105/Tsirtalis/02Cassinsfinch.jpg).
The Cassin's finch was first seen September 26th and most recently seen
yesterday, October 2nd. Finally, this morning (October 3rd) I saw a
lone CLARK'S NUTCRACKER pulling seeds from a pine cone in a tree in
front of the HPER building on the Utah State University campus, also in
Logan.
Good birding,
Ryan
