I went out to bird Hyrum Reservoir this morning and saw about 14 TUNDRA SWANS (new for my Cache Valley year list-somehow I missed them last winter). There were also about 30 or so BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the crab apple tree just east of the main entrance to Hyrum State Park. Other birds included COMMON LOONS (one appeared to be a Pacific Loon, noticeably smaller than the Common Loons, but was too far away to confirm the ID), and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. I also saw what was probably a Hooded Merganser, but again too far away to confirm the ID and could not relocate the bird after pulling out my field guide to check field mark descriptions - yes, a beginners mistake. The usual mix of birds were on the reservoir. Later this morning I went to Antelope Island to get another look the Long-tailed Ducks and was surprised to see a MARBLED GODWIT. It was on the north side of the causeway near the first bridge. Seems a little late for the godwit.
Thanks.
